On November 18, 1928, the world’s most famous mouse made his very first public debut. Today, we celebrate 90 years of Mickey in one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe. Starting with the first sketches of a character who was almost named Mortimer, we trace the career of Walt Disney’s and Ub Iwerks’s most famous creation, one met with an explosion of worldwide popularity preceded only by the earlier successes of Charlie Chaplin.
With unlimited access to Disney’s vast historical collections as well as public and private collections, the authors bring Mickey’s success story to life concept art, story sketches, background paintings, and animation drawings as well as historical photographs trace the origins and evolution of such timeless favorites as Steamboat Willie, The Band Concert, and Brave Little Tailor. They also follow Mickey as he builds on this legendary library of short cartoons by appearing in two historic feature-length films, Fantasia and Fun and Fancy Free.Unfinished projects, many of them presented for the first time through original storyboard drawings, unveil a Mickey that might have been. Extensive archival research sheds new light on little-known chapters of Mickey’s career, such as his pioneering radio shows, the origins of the Mickey Mouse Club, and his use as a patriotic icon during World War II. Along the way, we encounter the work of all major Mickey artists in both film and comics, including such greats as Ub Iwerks, Win Smith, Ferdinand Horvath, Fred Moore, Floyd Gottfredson, Carl Barks, Manuel Gonzales, Paul Murry, Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano, Byron Erickson, César Ferioli, and Noel Van Horn.
Mickey Mouse has left an indelible mark on everyday culture as well as high art, becoming a favored subject for Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. As Walt Disney once said “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing―that it was all started by a mouse.†And an end to the success story is nowhere in sight. Today, 90 years after his creation, Mickey remains as lovable and popular as ever. Let’s pay tribute to the little fellow, his legend, and his legacy with a monument to the one and only Mickey Mouse.

Walt Disney Mickey Mouse The Ultimate History David Gerstein J B Kaufman Daniel Kothenschulte Books Reviews
- This book about Mickey Mouse is revolutionary and definitely a "must have". It is huge (I really mean huge) and the amount of new material it contains is absolutely stunning. Never-seen-before photographs and pieces of artwork on every single page, in-depth research and new information in every single chapter... The chapter about the un-produced Mickey shorts, in fact, is so extraordinary that, by itself, it would justify buying the book. And all the other chapters are page turners. Buy this book, now. There is no better Xmas / Hanukkah / Birthday / Valentine gift around for yourself or others.

Mickey's Life Story....Call It "The Mickey Mouse Bible"
In a general sense. A Bible is a book of chapters of divine inspiration. I'm going to just brush aside any possible negative connotations that may arise from calling one a "Mickey Mouse...!" That I'll leave to those more affected by societal choices, because "The Mickey Mouse Bible" is also an excellent description for this more than substantial tome!
Most fans of Mickey who have experienced the joys of his innocence, the ease with which he is able to raise a smile on even the most stoic grimace, will appreciate, at least for a few hours and likely days "sharing THE Mouse!" Each of us experience Mickey in our own way. We adopt him into our families, but it's his longevity and ever evolving youth, that touches something different inside each one of his fans! Most might feel that "Bible" is an exaggeration...not meI I had some time before work, the 14 pound parcel had arrived the previous day. So I cracked the cover and decided to simply turn pages, one after the other quickly, to review each of the images on my first pass thru. I was surprised that one and a half hours later, I was forced to leave for work having about one quarter still left on just a first pass! While there are so many wonderful prints that are full page art, there are an incredible number of between one to four images on most two page spreads. The size is a wonder to behold, especially if you have never experienced a book of this size! You easily see each and every image and still have an incredible amount of story also. There is one spread of letters written to Mickey and they we're artfully arranged at various angles. It is a credit to "team Taschen" that you are able to read each one! I know that it will easily delight for a week or more requiring significant time dedicated to complete this treasure! Then, you'll likely start a re-read of favorite parts of your new "Mickey Bible"!
The second thing I noticed almost immediately is the incredible archival paper stock used in this publication. I love the tactile feel of a quality book. I believe that as long as a bookbinder's art is still practiced with skills such as this, there will always be books as part of our digital age. Anyway, back to the paper. I was going to say it is very close to at least a 20 pound paper stock but I'm just going to go ahead and say it is! I have no other book in our collection, save a couple also from Taschen, with stock as heavy as that which was used in Mickey's book! And we have a substantial library.
Mickey Mouse's fans bond to him as I stated, each quite in their own special way. For me, parts of this book provided that warm feeling of déjà vu while reading about Mickey. No surprise though as he's been part of my life and my children's lives in their entirety. In retrospect, parts seem an always shifting combination of "Mickey love", of a witness to history, of heightened emotions, and finally the project in-total, could only be accurately identified as "inspired." This very hefty book, weighing in over eleven pounds was created not only for history's sake on the occasion of Mickey's 90th, but more generally just to make people happy! "Happiness" is also an accurate descriptive word that came to my mind, while turning each and every page, and shares the emotion I have each time I see Mickey in any Disney Park on the planet.
Do yourself a favor. Go to your device of choice accessing the internet, and place your order for this momentous book. If you don't do it soon, you likely won't ever see it before the holidays. And the holidays are the perfect time to share this experience together. You'll need some moolah...yes....even at 's significant savings U.S....it's "moolah" in my family! You can always return it, but I'm confident it will never happen! As popular as I feel this book will be, even a few months wait is a wait you will agree was worth it!
You may wish to skim past this slightly off topic paragraph, but if you do, you will be missing a great tip! Pick up one of those absolutely gorgeous www./1543469986 acrylic/lucite "BookstandArt" pieces from Taschen. Then you can read it comfortably while sharing, and keep it close at hand for friends and neighbors to peruse when they drop by over the holidays. I have a couple of these stands. I placed one on a curio coffee table in our family room. There are literally hundreds of teeny-tiny miniatures (did you know Walt also shared my affinity of tiny things?) purchased over the years and carefully placed to produce a large "shadow box". I prefer nothing on top to obscure my tiny treasures. No stacks of books, no coasters, nothing. Why am I telling you this? It's because as an "all good things come from Disney" fan and with our lovely Taschen "BookstandArt", I am able to place this enormous book on the table and our guests are still able to see right through and into the case! It now only takes up the width of the book which allows people to peruse the book at leisure where prior they would have had to use a dedicated space for such a book! So very nice, get one now, this book WILL NOT fit most bookcases and even properly laid flat to relieve stress along the spine, it will overhang quite a bit. Get the stand, you will want to show it off anyway. And while $100 may be a tad pricey as a gift, it will be a gift remembered as well as used.
I'm not going to repeat the reviewed content contained in the lengthy description here on , so take a few moments to read that also. I agree with it all.
Enjoy your re-acquaintance with an old pal that never seems to age. When I'm a sprite 89, God willing, I'll still have this book and a younger generation to read to me and turn it's weighty pages! I'll REALLY appreciate my bookstand even more www./1543469986 then, and Mickey and pals will still be as youthful and trendy as they are today! Then, it will be nearing a time for those trained in the fine art of bibliopegy at Taschen, to produce a companion piece to delight a new generation of Mickey's pals! Can I still manage Pirates of the Caribbean at 89! Yes Oh Yes! But will I still manage a "sumo" tome as a Octogenarian? I'm sure gonna try! Oh Boy!!
DISCLAIMER, THE FINE PRINT, & THE END This review and it's content are entirely my own, I received nothing from anyone as compensation or anything else for writing it. Special note of thanks to Mr. Walter Elias Disney and Mr. Ub Iwerks. "remember, it all started with a mouse." - If you like history (not just Mickey's & Walt's, but also animation/film history and pop culture history during the last century), you too will love this book. I appreciate the high quality graphics, design, and book binding. I wish they could have ended the book with a mention of the upcoming first ever park 'ride' based on Mickey, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway, as I think that would have been a nice touch, sort of "coming full-circle" in Mickey's story. But I understand the publication timing might not have allowed for it (or the editors just didn't agree that it should be included, lol). ***'s packing to protect the contents was non-existent. Not the first time has decided books do not need any protection at all inside a much bigger, unprotected, box. Very disappointing. I wanted to give fewer stars because of that, but that of course is not the fault of the team that put this incredible book together.
- Once in a great while, a major contribution to recording the history of our culture is created. Such is the achievement of "Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse the Ultimate History." This momentous book, weighing ten and a half pounds!, tells the amazing story of two individuals, one real and one reel. And, how they supported each other to claim a permanent place in our lexicon and in our hearts. My only issue it all started with a train, not a mouse. Other than that, bravo!.
- I brought this book since I am such a huge Disney fan. It sells for $200 in the parks so had it for a great deal! The book is huge and very heavy. Comes in a great protective box. Has so much Mickey history. I would defiantly recommend!
- Outstanding book. Nothing else compares to it. The quality is top-notch, the content is superb, and the packaging exceptional. Everything you would expect for an item of this price, which is more than I'd usually pay, but in this case, well worth it. The book is a collectible that will be appreciated for many years to come.
- I love this book. It is meant to be a resource forever. The illustrations are beautiful and the text quite interesting. It is like having an art book that you look at over and over again.
- Fantastic coffee table style book with plenty of color photographs. Photographs are super and the book has excellent research. Would recommend this book to any Disney fan.
