The Incal Limited Edition Oversized Deluxe Alejandro Jodorowsky Mᔻius 9781594653445 Books Reviews
- This is an oversized (deluxe) slipcased edition of the whole Incal saga by Jodorowsky and Moebius and limited to 1550 copies. It starts as a science fiction meets hard boiled detective story which quickly expands into a struggle for power and control involving many powerful forces on an epic scale.
John Difool, a lowly detective (class 'R' in fact) who really wants nothing more than to satisfy his immediate desires unwittingly finds himself the reluctant guardian of a powerful and mysterious artifact called the Black Incal. Suddenly his world is turned upside down as he is pursued from all sides for the Black Incal and he is forced into alliance with a fascinating and uncohesive band of misfits. Together they must do nothing less than save the universe. Can they overcome the incredible odds? Can John at least just try to put the collective wellbeing of all the galaxy's inhabitants above his own?
Jodorowsky's writing isn't for everyone due to it's fairly loose commitment to narrative and characterisation but for me this is the most cohesive science-fiction story from him, at least from his Jodoverse books (the series of books that occur in the same universe as The Incal). That might be due to the fact that many of the ideas in the Incal came from his planned film adaptation of Dune which never got made but which he spent considerable energy on - The Incal came directly after the Dune project (often called the greatest movie never made) and was certainly influenced by it
This is also a tour de force from the artist Moebius whose style evolves over the course of the book - personally, if I tire of reading the story for a bit then I'll happily spend a while flipping through just enjoying the art. For anyone looking to begin exploring Jodorowsky or Moebius, The Incal is a great place to start (albeit, even if not this particular edition).
For those unfamiliar with this edition. This contains the entire 300 page Incal saga in it's original colours (the classic collection) plus the 8 page story "In the Heart of the Impregnable Metabunker" which details the origins of Solune (who the Metabaron raises as his son), and a short section of one page illustrations. The whole origins of Solune sequence was originally part of the story but was later replaced by only a few panels which just mention it in passing - so it's great to have it included as bonus material in this edition where it belongs. There's no additional texts such as an introduction which I like as I think the work and the quality of the production speak for themselves. It's a large format book (larger than the Moebius Library series for instance) which shows off the French master's art nicely and printed on thick matte paper which is the first time I've seen this from the publisher (Humanoids) at this size. I personally like this choice though it does add considerably to the thickness and weight of the book but it has a nice flexible binding so it actually feels really sturdy - much easier to handle and read than the similarly sized Metabarons Deluxe, for instance. The slipcase isn't a standard slipcase either as it has a separate piece which is like a cap (see the photo, it's hard to explain).
I hope Humanoids follow up with similar editions of 'Before the Incal' and 'Final Incal' and maybe the other spinoff titles starting with 'The Metabaron'. One edge of the slipcase has a nice image of John Difool while the other side has a minimal design with white letters on a black background - either way a set would look great together.
I think it's a really definitive edition for anyone who's a fan of the Incal and well worth it. Grab it while you can and enjoy. - The greatest sci fi graphic novel of all time seriously by far . Get this oversized edition while you can once they’re gone it’ll be hard to get ahold of . 100$ is totally worth it. Just do it !
