“Just what is a Muscle Car?” Road Test magazine asked in June 1967. The answer “Exactly what the name implies. It is a product of the American car industry adhering to the hot rodder’s philosophy of taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it. . . . The Muscle Car is Charles Atlas kicking sand in the face of the 98 horsepower weakling.” Unconcerned with such trivial details as comfort and handling, the vintage American muscle car was built for straight-line speed and quickly became the ride of choice for power-hungry racers and serious gearheads. In a country where performance was measured in brute force, a quarter mile at a time, the muscle car was the perfect machine.
"I bought this as a Christmas present for my son in law who has recently developed an interest in the old muscle cars. It delivers! Beautiful pics. He loves it and it is displayed on his coffee table."

The Art of the Muscle Car Collector Edition David Newhardt Peter Harholdt Brock Yates 0752748344211 Books Reviews
- This book is a must have if you love muscle cars. The photography is stunning and it comes with little prints that you could have framed. Each car is paired with a cleverly written synopsis of its genesis and key qualities.
- This is a large format book filled with beautifully photographed muscle cars from 1964 to 1974. Each of the 47 chapters covers one make & model, with two-page spreads of each car. Additional photos show under the hood, inside the car, plus close ups of other interesting details. Each chapter has a page of text about the model.
What's covered? All the brands are here from AMC to Pontiac, featuring top-of-the-line engine packages, from the Boss 302 & 340 Sixpack thru the SS 396, COPO 427, LS6 454, 400 Ram Air IV, 455 SuperDuty, 428 Cobra Jet, Boss 429, 440 SixPack and 426 Hemi.
What's missing? The smaller compact based cars such as the Chevy Nova SS, Dodge Dart, Plymouth Duster and early Barracuda (prior to 1970) and Mustang (65-66) are not shown. As a two-seat sports car, the Vett is also excluded, so no 427 midyears with "Stinger" hoods or L88-powered Corvettes.
The text is brief but does a good job of setting the stage and providing context for the sizzling pictures, but this is not a reference book. The 0-60 mph and 1/4 mile performance numbers are usually not the best numbers from the various period magazines. There are a few typos, such as transposing the torque numbers for the 440 and 426 engines in one place, and the Charger R/T MSRP is incorrectly shown as the base Charger MSRP. But these are minor quibbles that don't detract from the overall presentation. With the large format and high quality paper, the pictures and the cars are spectacular.
A list of the models covered follows, along with the years shown. (If a year appears more than once, then two different chapters are shown for different versions that year, such as the 1970 Road Runner and 1970 Superbird.)
