Miss Julia, a recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow and unceremoniously announces that the child is the bastard son of Miss Julia's late husband. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small Southern community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal-and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence turns her life upside down.

With razor-sharp wit and perfect "Steel Magnolia" poise, Miss Julia speaks her mind indeed-about a robbery, a kidnapping, and the other disgraceful events precipitated by her husband's death. Fast-paced and charming, with a sure sense of comic drama, a cast of crazy characters, and a strong Southern cadence, Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind will delight readers from first page to last.

  • This is not my typical kind of reading, but I read very good things about this novel. Let me tell you. It is a page turner through and through. The chapters are all about the same length and give you just enough to keep you wondering what will happen next. Miss Julia proves to be a woman set in her old school ways but she sees how many of those ways have controlled her actions. This is definitely a novel about a protagonist having an awakening about her own life while intersecting with others in a solid plot that keeps the story moving. The characters are all well developed and the climax is satisfying in every way, from added complications to love and redemption. I recommend this to anybody who loves a story about change and lots of layers that the author peels back like an onion in no hurry but just at the right speed. A true gem of a book.
  • I loved this story...I loved the characters...most of them anyway! You have the "villains" in here like any other story....And their villains were that....Made you love to hate them! No, this isn't fantasy, sci-fi or anything like that...It's just regular fiction. Little bit of a suspense and having you wondering what's going to happen but knowing that things could work out.

Now, Miss Julia, sometimes got on my last nerve...but I adored her! But I could understand why she did some of the things she did and thought the way she did...but it was annoying still mostly because, at the age she is, she should know better...but...even that has a flip side because for so long...things went one way all of her life, and after she got out from under those things, they were still deeply instilled in her.

When I saw these books at my local bookstore, I grabbed one of each title that I saw and had to order this one online because it wasn't with the books I bought and this is the first in the series. But I do have the first eight (8) books in what I believe has at least fifteen (15) books total. I'm not quite sure if it has to be read in order, but I do suggest you read this first so that you can understand what's going on in the other books and how things ended up being how they are.

There is very little cussing in this book and Miss Julia and her people are spiritual people but you're not bombarded with it. I really can't say too much more than that without giving spoilers, which I try not to do often.

This was an easy, light read that I will gladly go on to the next one soon. I will read them between other books I am trying to catch up on and/or when I just need a light, cute, make you smile and/or laugh kind of read.
  • Anyone that follows my reviews will know that I love mysteries, and this series is far removed from a mystery. But, I enjoy reading all types and this series caught my attention because there were so many books written in the series. My mind thought "this series must start as a child and keep going through life", but as usual, I was wrong. This author jumps out and grabs you with the introduction of "Miss Julia" and her thoughts, feelings, and reactions to life events. You feel as if you are part of her life and she becomes involved with the unexpected, the danger, and the duplicity of people surrounding her. I became attached to her views of life and how she handles situations, and have already ordered the next two in this series of approximately 15. Will keep you posted with reviews as they occur.
  • This is the first in the Miss Julia series. I'd read the last one first awhile ago, and was not pleased with it. However, I mentioned the series to a friend, and she told me it was wonderful. She recommended the earlier books. So I bought "Speaks Her Mind," and adored the book. It was a real cozy mystery, with fun characters, great baddies, and Ms. Ross' writing is impeccable. This is also funny and touching. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to spend time with endearing characters and be swept away by wonderful prose.
  • My first Miss Julia book, thanks to my daughter's recommendation. Loved it and will definitely continue the series. Miss Julia is somewhat younger than I, but I can SO relate to a widow in her late 60s, trying to get used to her new station in life. Been there, done that. She was more generous sharing her home than I probably would have been with folks down on their luck. But what a delightful array of crazy situations they provided her! This is small town, senior citizen fun with lots of younger characters thrown in!
  • I picked this up after a series of heavy, sad novels had burdened my heart and left me feeling in need of a laugh. Ann. B. Ross delivered. Miss Julia is a funny old southern bird with all the trappings of a privileged widowhood before a scrappy 9 year old boy is deposited on her doorstep, wreaking havoc on her solitude. Ross' story gets more sordid and desperate as the book zips by ( and it does zip) - it's one of those " just when you thought it couldn't get any worse....." Kind of trial and tribulation stories speckled with wit and southern sarcasm. Really delightful, if forgettable. And then, only forgettable because I tend to recall those novels that leave an indelible mark on me. This, actually soothed and relieved me of some of that - which was exactly what I needed from it. Great fun, gentle heart tugs, truisms of the soul and reminders about the truth about Us, who is really "family" in our lives and how far we go to keep those we love from unnecessary pain.
  • I was really enjoying this book watching the characters evolve until the point where a character was trying to take over legal guardianship of the main character in order to gain access to her money for his own purposes. It was stated by the legal minds in the book that this could easily be accomplished. This seemed a little far fetched and distracted from an otherwise good read.
  • This book is just as crazy and convoluted as can be making it a very fun book. One never knows what is coming next! If you want to be entertained, you need to read it. The author has written numerous books and I will be reading some of them.
