The Wonder Years 40 Women over 40 on Aging Faith Beauty and Strength Leslie Leyland Fields Lauren F Winner Joni Eareckson Tada Elisa Morgan Madeleine L'Engle Kay Warren 9780825445224 Books Reviews
- I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of the book. I have read it cover-to-cover. Several times I have been asked to choose as "favorite" essay. I cannot. I really can't. Eat one speaks to me in a slightly different way. Moving from one essay to the next was like eating a box of mixed chocolates each was delicious but different from the last. Try one more. Read one more. Then it was over! I read every page--and didn't gain a pound ;) Yes. I recommend this book to anyone woman who dreads turning 40, 50, 60, 70, or 80. There's good news coming. Keep going
- I'm 53 and up to this point have not struggled emotionally with aging. In fact, as each year goes by I seem to get happier.
I'm a counselor and author who studies happiness so I know that most people get happier and happier with each decade, and they have their peak life experiences in their late 60s and early 70s. After that they start to decline only a little bit in regard to happiness (as friends die and health declines). However, most people never get anywhere near the unhappiness they experience in their 20s.
Isn't that great news?
The book's author Leslie Leyland Field's is a wonderful example of a woman living life to the full. She lives in Alaska and helps support her family by catching salmon. On the side she teaches, writes, and travels. Nestled alongside her adventures, you'll find stories from 40 other "over 40" Christian authors.
This book will encourage any woman who feels like her best years are behind her.

They will thank you. - I'm on the cusp of my fiftieth birthday. My forties have been hard, as reality and gravity collided with me in the middle. But they've also been THE most clarifying and freeing decade of my life. As I look to my future, I fully expect the years to come to be full of wonder. But these last ten years have been lonely too. I've found the voices of women to be somewhat hushed in my middle-ages. It's tempting to sit down quietly in a culture that feeds on youth, as if we have nothing valuable to say.
The women of "The Wonder Years" defy that myth with their deeply personal stories of reality and gravity, grace in loss, hard won wisdom, and strength. Stories that bring to mind a woman many know "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come." (Proverbs 3125) The Wonder Years is a chorus of laughter, tears, resolve, and adventure. If you're in or even nearing these wonder years, this powerful book is both a travel guide and companion. Dad always said, "Don't live life as bystander sport!". If you are 40 or older, or not, this book will bless you, or some who is. Having attended a writer's workshop taught by Leslie Leyland Fields, I had the privilege of previewing it. These WONDERful writers will encourage you to live the second half of life with wonder - embracing all that God has for YOU! - I loved this book and have just bought 8 copies to give to some of my family members and friends who are over 40. I got the chance to read an advanced copy and it was sassy, full of life, encouraging and covered so many of the life events that seem to come with these beautiful and yet sometimes difficult years. The compilation of essays make it a fun read and allow you to hang out with so many lovely and diverse woman who are over 40. The only thing better would be having them all in the same room for a live chat. If you are longing to embrace your 40's and beyond this book is for you and all your friends.
- Women have plenty to say, and these mellowed voices of women with a few years behind them and many years ahead of them speak into so many areas of my life. From the joy of adoption to the trials (and laughter) of menopause to the beauty of aging gracefully, I found well-written essays that made me laugh and cry and those speak to my heart. This is the perfect Mother's Day gift and I'm giving several away to friends "of an age".
- I love that these are short, true stories. Fiction just does not capture me like reading and learning from the wisdom of 40 talented writers. I found myself reading passages aloud to those around me because the writing was so rich. It covers topics that I've lived through and I found myself nodding along and other topics that I've only wondered about. At 52 it inspired me to keep living and loving well. Well done Leslie. Thank you for this wonderful gift.
- I discovered this author when she was a guest "on the porch" of Ann Vokamp. I was intrigued when I read she and her family were salmon fishermen in Kodiak, Alaska because my family had spent 3 years in Kodiak. Well I am so glad I found her! I loved this book. It was motivating and encouraging to read from so many women going through different stages in life. Leslie's writing is real and vulnerable and stirs my heart for more of Jesus and Jesus living. I love her blog and can't wait to read another of her books. If you are a women of any age, you will glean so much from this book of wisdom.
