  • Gillihan condenses CBT into applicable interventions that guide individuals to change negative thoughts, core beliefs, and maladaptive behaviors. As an mental health professional (MHP) with a Master's degree in psychotherapy (specifically, CBT), I endorse this book for individuals who are looking for practical tools and interventions to help with specific issues/problems. One premise of CBT is that we teach clients that the one hour of therapy session that focuses on the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client is not the primary agent of change. (This concept countermands other theoretical orientations and constructs in psychology in which the therapeutic relationship is the primary agent of change.) Rather, the therapy occurs when applying CBT interventions the other six days and 23 hours per week outside the therapy sessions and outside the therapist/client relationship. That does not mean that therapy sessions should not take place; however, the purpose of therapy is to equip clients with applicable tools and interventions that they can put into practice. Gillihan's book provides a comprehensive set of applicable CBT interventions that have been simplified for the layperson's use.

  • I've read and practiced CBT , REBT techniques outlined by guys like Ellis and Burns for years. This book has been added to my resources on this subject. He covers the gamut of CBT and, most importantly, adds new material from research that has been conducted since the originators of this very effective therapy ( mindfulness for example). Written in a down to earth style so very layman friendly. If you use CBT or want to get a fine introduction, and then some.... read Gillihan.
  • A must read for anxiety reduction. The author hits it on the head in a simple to read and understand way.
  • Very readable and I started treating myself right away after the first few chapters. It is an excellent layman treatise on the subject. Finally I know what CBT is and I can use it on my patients and on myself. Now I give myself more permission to turn negative experiences in my life into a positive power that helps me grow and see the good in all that happens to me. Seriously. But you need to want to be positive. Life is hard and I can see how some of us may not want to get over a passive negative
    pessimistic state.
  • As a professional counselor I enjoy reading books which reinforce what I use in my practice. I felt this book is also a good tool to use with clients as it presents cognitive behavioral therapy is laymens terms.

  • This is a good guide for someone who doesn't know anything about CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and is curious to learn a bit about it. But it honestly feels a bit like it's trying to be everything to everyone. There are whole books on the complexities of anxiety and CBT; in this book, it gets a chapter. Ditto for depression, anger, etc. If you're just looking to dip your toe into CBT, this would be a book to try. But if you're ready for anything more in depth, I suggest you look elsewhere.
