Beneath Montana Sky A Montana Sky Novella The Montana Sky Series Debra Holland Books Reviews

  • The whole series is wonderful and very "G" rated. It is nice to pick up a book and not be affraid of bad laungage or sex. The love stories are sweet and innocent according to their time period.
Another feature of the stories is the fact that the characters are hard working people with a focus on family and doing good acts for each other. Although there are a few of those typical mean personalities that are found in every town but they are kept in check by the good people. The author is a very talented writer. The story has a smooth flow and covers every perspective to bring the different situations together. Very enjoyable and relaxing reading.
  • After his foreman's family is lost to a wagon accident, John finds himself the guardian of the sole survivor of the family, 13-year-old Nick, and suddenly John has a reason to go back to Boston and look for a bride. A great look into how things began in Sweetwater Springs, with John Carter and Pamela's story, and it makes me want to reread Wild Montana Sky (with Nick and Elizabeth) which takes up the story 11 years later. I almost feel like I need a timeline to keep it all straight, the way the stories in this series are being written out of order, but it is really nice to go back and be able to fill in gaps and bits of history from the series that I wondered about a time or two. John and Pamela's courtship was so sweet and I loved the little notes he left on her pillow. Great Series!
  • The book was very good, but only told a partial story. Where was the romance? We have a bride with unresolved issues. Pamela felt she was John's second choice. How long does she live with this thought? Was the marriage ever consumated? Not that I need a graphic description, but some mention of it and the feelings it engendered would have helped the romantic story. This story mostly deals with grief and providing a mother figure. The book stops with the move to Montana and then just ends???
  • This was a fun read and I really liked the characters, but there was a complete lack of conflict and tension in the story. Even though it's a romance and supposed to be light and fluffy, that doesn't mean that it doesn't need some sort of conflict to it.

It makes me sad, because I enjoyed the characters and there was a lot of potential to the story, but everything just came together in the story without any character growth or issues, even though it definitely had plenty of opportunities to do so.

For example, the heroine is super insecure and is convinced the hero is in love with her best friend. Conflict. Except after the first road bumb, the friend sits them both down and they clear it up and they're engaged. You think that the story is about the two of them getting together, but that happens within the first half of the book. Then you think it might be about the city girl heroine getting used to the country, but everyone swoops in and takes care of everything for her. Every time the author set up a possible moment for there to be character growth or conflict and it is resolved immediately. There was more time spent describing every detail of their wedding than in trying to give give the characters more depth. Or building up the plot. Even the hero and heroine's courtship and falling in love is glossed over more than their wedding.

Like I said, I loved the characters and I'm going to try some more of her books. So, I hope the stories and character arcs get better.
  • I've read the entire series of MT Sky and found them entertaining and somewhat educational in that they give you picture of what living in the 1800's was like for those who chose to venture west.
Since I spend 3 mos of the year in MT it's easy for me to picture what the areas look like as they are described in the books.
The continuation of some of the characters from one book to the other keeps the series moving though you wouldn't likely feel like the story is unfinished if you only read one or two of the books.
This series would be appropriate, I think, for interesting reading for teens as well.
  • When his best friend and ranch foreman dies along with his wife and young daughter, John Carter is overcome with grief. But his godson, 13 yr old Nick, is alone now and his responsibility. Six months later and Nick is but a shadow of his former self. Not knowing what to do for him, John decides to find himself a wife. Having an aunt in Boston to help him makes his decision easier. Pamela is a shy 21 yr old who has resigned to become an old maid. He best friend Elizabeth is a stunning beauty and she feels inferior to her. But when Pamela sees John she is curious about him. After getting to know him, she finds herself falling for him. Thinking that John is after Elizabeth, Pamela tries to stop thinking about him and put her own happiness away to help her friend. John realizes that he is falling for Pamela also and wants her for his wife, and the more he learns about her the more he sees her with him forever.Compassionate and caring, she radiates her own beauty so he only sees her. Reaching Sweetwater Springs, Pamela is a little overwhelmed but she loves John. With Nick she shows him her love and let's him know she will always be there for him. With each new day beneath montana's sky, Pamela finds her place and where her heart truly belongs. I just loved this book. It was a joy to read John and Pamela's love story!
